One 1,755-Year-Old Coin With Both Greek AND Roman Imagery!
This ancient Roman Bronze Follis was minted around the year A.D. 200 in the region of Troas at a city called Alexandria. It's especially interesting because on one side of this bronze Follis, you have the Greek Goddess of fate, Tyche, replacing the typical portrait of the Roman Emperor, and on the reverse, you have intensely Roman imagery of the Capitoline Wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, an image related to Rome's founding—for both a very Greek design AND a very Roman design that make this a perfect piece of classical art.
Tales From The Troad
The city of Alexandria Troas was located on the Aegean Sea in the ancient Troad region and was later part the Roman province of Asia in present-day Turkey. Situated on the northern tip of Turkey's western coast, the city changed its name from Antigonous to Alexandria Around 301 B.C., following its conquest by Alexander the Great. Because there were so many cities called Alexandria in honor of the legendary Macedonian leader, this particular Alexandria was given the term "Troas" or "From the Troad." The city became a Roman colony during the reign of Emperor Augustus with the name of Colonia Alexandria Augusta Troas. The city also has a Biblical connection. It was an important port and the place from which Saint Paul began his missionary journeys to Europe. During Paul's third visit to Alexandria Troas, he restored life to Eutychus, who had fallen asleep from exhaustion during Paul's speech there and fell out of a third-story window.
