Silver Coins Struck During The Peak Of Rome’s Power

Beautiful coins from of the Roman Empire are among the most popular and coveted pieces in any collection of historic coins. Of those, the most desired are pieces struck when Rome was at the peak of its power, such as these stunning Silver Denarius coins struck from AD 193-211 during the lifetime of Septimius Severus, an emperor noted for converting the government into a military monarchy and thus helped usher in the absolute despotism that would go on to characterize the later Roman Empire. Though still unblemished by barbarian invasions, it was a critical tipping point that helped bring about the Fall of the Roman Empire.

Coins From The Founder Of The Severan Dynasty

The founder of the Severan Dynasty, Severus named his sons Caracalla and Geta as co-emperors in 198 and 209 respectively. Though Severus intended for them to rule jointly after his death, this dream proved to be an unrealistic fantasy for shortly after Severus died of natural causes in 211, Caracalla had his younger brother murdered during a supposed peace conference between the two. Despite this, Severus was regarded as an able leader under whose leadership saw the Roman Empire reach its greatest extent. During his reign, Severus enlarged the Roman army and increased the pay for his soldiers. To accomplish this military expansion, he debased the silver denarius several times, ultimately becoming the largest debasement since the reign of Emperor Nero and a decision that led to severe consequences for the long-term stability of the empire’s economy.
