The Difficult Reign Of Rome’s Philip The Arab

Philip I, often called Philip the Arab because he was born in the Roman province of Arabia, was Roman emperor from 244 to 249. According to historians, he was not only an ethnic Arab, but he was possibly Rome’s first Christian emperor though he strictly adhered to the Roman religion in public. From humble beginnings in the backwaters of the Roman Empire, Philip rose quickly through the ranks of the empire’s bureaucratic and military hierarchy to become emperor when he was just 40 years old. He was known for being pragmatic and diplomatic, even brokering peace with Persia to stabilize the empire. Philip’s reign was difficult and short-lived, however, and he faced rebellions, economic strain, and political distrust throughout the 5½ years he wore the purple robes.

Invasions And Uprisings Spell Doom For Philip And His Family

The empire was becoming overwhelmed by invasions and uprisings towards the end of Philip’s reign, so much so that he offered to resign. The Roman Senate urged him to stay, sending the loyal senator Decius to restore order in the eastern provinces. Decius was so successful in crushing the uprising that he allowed his legions to proclaim him emperor. This set up a showdown between Philip and Decius and their two armies met in battle near Verona in 249 where Philip was defeated, ending his troubled reign. Some historians believe Philp died in battle, others say he was assassinated by his own troops in an effort to curry favor with the new emperor. Philip's 11-year-old son and heir was murdered in Rome soon after.
