Coins From The Three Kings Of The East

It’s an accepted fact that the Biblical Kings who journeyed to a manger in Bethlehem brought with them gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh for the newborn king. But to make it all the way from places as far away as Persia and Northern India they also needed some ready cash and brought with them pieces of silver like the ancient Indo-Scythian Silver Drachms that are available here. Struck by King Azes from 58 BC to 5 AD, many Biblical scholars believe that Caspar, one of the so-called kings or “Wise Men” that visited the Christ child, was actually a representative sent by Azes, making these coins a tangible link to one of the most important events in history.

The Great King Of Kings Azes

This is a unique offering of ancient Greek coinage. The Scythians were Indo-European nomads who came out of central Asia and settled into an area from India to Bulgaria. These coins were inspired by ancient Greek designs and show King Azes holding wreath and whip while astride a horse. The coin’s reverse design shows Athena standing holding shield and spear. The obverse legend, written in Greek, reads: “of the Great King of Kings Azes” while the reverse is in Indian script. These coins are among the earliest bilingual coins. All are hand-struck and considered individual works of ancient art.
