In the days of Ancient Greece, an object with a name similar to that of a city frequently became its official symbol. So it was that the coins struck in the island city of Rhodes frequently depicted a rose on its reverse.

The Sun and the Rose

This silver drachma, struck sometime between 84 and 30, B.C., is one such coin, pairing its rose reverse with an obverse featuring Helios, the Greek sun god and the god of Rhodes. Fewer than 30 are known to exist, and we’ve secured this one graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in Mint State (MS) condition with a Surface 3/5, and a Strike 4/5. It also has a “Brushed” notation due to evidence of cleaning found under magnification. What’s more, less than 30 of these coins are known to exist, making it one of the rarest coins in the world!

The Colossus of Rhodes

Hundreds of years prior this island, located off the coast of what is now Turkey, greeted visitors with an enormous 90-foot-tall statue of Helios, which straddled the passage by which incoming ships would travel. This “Colossus of Rhodes” fell decades later due to an earthquake, but its fame has solidified its status as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
