- COINS THAT INSPIRED U.S. DESIGNS – These silver tetradrachm coins of Antioch are the inspiration for United States coin design. They were minted by the Roman emperors in the years from AD 200-260.
- WHERE CHRISTIANS WERE FIRST CALLED CHRISTIANS – Minted in the city of Antioch where Christians were first called Christians in the Bible (Acts 11:26) and from where Saint Paul started his missionary journeys.
Antioch — the city where, according to the Bible, Christians were first called Christians. The people there were known for their skepticism, and featured Tyche, the goddess of fortune, on their coins rather than the typical image of Hercules, Athena or Zeus.
In the world of coins, you can’t talk about Antioch without bringing up Michel Prieur, the unchallenged world expert on the Roman Provincial coinage from the city. His vast collection may be the most famous Roman coin collection of the millennium — and we’ve secured a number of rare Tetradrachms from an era known as the Crisis of the Third Century.
Struck in Antioch between the years 200 and 2460, these coins come certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in About Uncirculated (AU) condition and pedigreed as having once been a part of the Prieur Collection. In addition, each was personally catalogued by Prieur and will arrive along with his original envelope.
The Emperors that minted these coins include Philip I, Septimius Severus, Geta, Caracalla, Eleagabalus, Trajan Decius, Macrinus and others. Your coin will be from one of these emperors. Dates and emperors will vary. These emperors represent some of the best and worst rulers ever to wear the supreme crown of laurel leaves. This turbulent era nearly brought down the Roman Empire in which over the course of half a century at least 26 men staked claimed to the title of emperor.
Now you can add this ancient coin struck nearly 1,800 years ago during one of the bloodiest periods in Roman history. It’s a beautiful coin that may have been held by centurions, generals and assassins during one of the most turbulent times in world history — a coin that also originates from one of the most fabled coin collections ever assembled!
