19 Centuries-Old Trajan Denarius!
These are genuine Roman Silver Denarii from the reign of Emperor Trajan, universally celebrated as one of Rome's greatest soldier emperors. During his reign, the empire reached its greatest territorial extent as he conquered the powerful Dacian kingdom in central Europe, an event celebrated on his famous column in Rome. Later in his reign he attacked the Parthian empire, annexing both Armenia and Mesopotamia. He died without any natural borne children, succeeded by his adoptive son Hadrian.
The Quintessential Image Of A Roman Emperor
The life of Emperor Trajan (53-117) is a real rags-to-riches story. He rose from a common non-patrician family to preside over the largest expansion in Roman history. A successful general in the Roman army, Trajan was adopted by the Emperor Nerva. When Nerva died in A.D. 98, Trajan was accepted by both the army and the Roman Senate, and he would reign until his death in 117. He is remembered as being a wise and just emperor and a morally upstanding man. The quintessential image of a Roman Emperor, Trajan is hailed as one of the "Five Good Emperors" who ruled during the height of the Roman Empire from 96-180.
As one would expect for something that's more than 1,900 years old, these coins show some wear, but enough of the design remains to attribute them to the emperor Trajan. The emperor himself is depicted just as he appeared on the statues made in his likeness: as a handsome middle-aged man with pursed lips, a stern expression, furrowed brow, and a "bowl" haircut that sweeps around his ears topped by a crown of laurel leaves that gives the portrait an idealized look that echoes portraits of Octavius Augustus, the first Roman emperor. The austere, yet stoic and dignified appearance is THE epitome of what one expects a Roman Emperor to look like!

These silver denarii would have been used by ancient Romans in the markets or to pay soldiers fighting in campaigns far from the baths and games of Rome—or perhaps even by Trajan himself as gifts in his alimenta welfare program that was designed to subsidize orphans and poor children throughout Italy.
