Both of Cleopatra’s Lovers on One Rare Ancient Roman Denarius

In the past 17 years, only 40 of these coins have been sold. Of those 40, this rare denarius of Julius Caesar and Mark Antony definitely ranks in the top five!

Struck in Cisalpine Gaul in the autumn of 43 B.C.—about eight months after the death of Julius Caesar—this coin features a very fine portrait of Caesar, which can be difficult to find today. Mark Antony used this portrait, along with his own, as a propaganda tool in an attempt to become sole emperor of Rome. He even uses the legend CAESAR DIC, referring to Caesar as God. This was a rather sneaky move, as he had just joined a triumvirate of rulers with Octavian and Marcus Lepidus.

The minting of the coin can be traced back to what is now Southern France, referred to at the time as Cisalpine Gaul.

OBVERSE:   Bare head of Mark Antony right, lituus at left. Legend: M ANTON

REVERSE:   Laureate head of Caesar right, capis at left. Legend: CAESAR DIC

This coin has been certified by NGC as About Uncirculated (AU) condition with a Strike 4/5 and a Surface 4/5. For a coin that’s well over 2,000 years old, that’s an incredible accomplishment. And so is adding this coin to your collection!
