Own a Coin That was Actually Part of the British Museum's Collection!
Wouldn't it be cool to meander through one of the world's most prestigious museums and then point to one of the items on display and have one of the curators wrap it up for you so you could take it home and add it to your own collection? While this may sound surreal, this is the next best thing: It's an actual coin that was in the British Museum for more than a century - and now you CAN take it home!
The coin is an ancient Roman bronze coin that was originally part of the famous Edward Wright Wigan Collection acquired by the British Museum in 1872 for £10,000 - the equivalent of more than £1,000,000 today! It remained in the British Museum for the next 108 years before it was deaccessioned in 1980 and sold to a private collector. Though not considered a rare coin, it is the finest known specimen of only four that have been sold since 2000. Besides its unbeatable pedigree, it comes certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in Choice Extremely Fine* (CH XF*) condition with a Strike 5/5 and a Surface 4/5! The added "star" designation means that this coin is at the top of the Extremely Fine grading scale, further illustrating the brilliance of this coin.
Struck between 124 and 128, this coin features the bust of Roman Emperor Hadrian, who ruled as one of the Roman Empire's greatest emperors from 117 to 138. He built the famous defensive wall in Britannia that bears his name, portions of which still stand today in northern England. The coin's reverse shows the god Neptune. At 32 mm in diameter, this large coin shows off all the details. It's a beautiful coin that really stands out from the crowd!
