The Roman Empress Who Became the Mother of Christianity

  • THE HOUSE OF CONSTANTINE THE GREAT – This bronze coin was minted sometime between AD 306–337 by Constantine I the Great in the name of his mother, Saint Helena.
  • MOTHER OF CHRISTIANITY – Helena used her wealth and status to further the growth of Christianity. Regarded as the “Mother of Christianity,” she is also referred to as Helen of Constantinople to distinguish her from others with similar names.
  • THE TRUE CROSS – She made many pilgrimages to the Holy Land, where she discovered the “True Cross” and other important sites in the life of Jesus. At each of these sites she built churches and monasteries.
  • HARD-TO-FIND COINS – The coins of Saint Helena are rather scarce and hard to find on the market. She is a very important and popular figure in Christian history and therefore the coins with her portrait are quite popular amongst collectors.

The Patron Saint of archaeologists, divorced mothers, and converts to Christianity, Saint Helena is regarded by many as the “Mother of Christianity.” That’s no small epithet, but one that is wholly justified. Not only was she the mother of Constantine the Great, the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity, but she used her own power and influence as a Roman empress to further the growth of Christianity. One has to believe she offered guidance and support to her son as he moved the Roman Empire from a pagan-worshipping society to one that followed the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Known for her piety and religious devotion, Helena is credited with many pilgrimages to the Holy Land, where she discovered relics relating to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, including the True Cross. Among her other discoveries, Helena found the Birthplace of Christ in Bethlehem, Mount Sinai, the place of the Crucifixion, and the valley where the wood for the cross was taken. In each of these sites she built churches and monasteries leaving a legacy of discovery and faith that lasts to this day.

Constantine proved to be a devoted son as well as one of Rome’s greatest emperors by proclaiming his mother Augusta Imperatrix, and gave her unlimited access to the imperial treasury that she used on her quest to locate the relics of Christianity. He also struck these beautiful bronze coins that depicted his mother. Her bust appears on the coin’s obverse while the reverse shows a full figure of the Empress holding a branch.

Each coin in this offer also comes graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) in About Uncirculated (AU) condition — a truly remarkable grade considering that the coins of Saint Helena are rather scarce and hard to find on the market. She is a very important and popular figure in Christian history and therefore the coins with her portrait are quite popular amongst collectors. Your coin will also come encapsulated in an acrylic coin holder and displayed in a Story Vault holder that includes an informative storycard about this historic coin.

Don’t let this incredible coin get away; trace the history of Christianity and secure one now for your collection!
