Ancient Silver Tetradracm Of Demetrois I NGC AU
One of Only Two Silver Tetradrachm of Demetrios I Known to Exist!
After the death of Alexander the Great, several rulers added their images to coins in order to link themselves to the great leader and attempt to shore up power. On rare occasions, other leaders were deified and added to coinage. However, it was not the custom of the ancient Greeks to put the portrait of a living king on their coins.
This silver tetradrachm, struck between 306 and 283 B.C., is the first coin known to feature the face, name and title of a living king -- Demetrios I. It may also be one of the most beautiful coins ever struck featuring a living king -- but only two are known to exist! This magnificent piece of history comes graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as About Uncirculated (AU) with a Strike 5/5 and Surface 4/5. It’s in absolutely beautiful condition.
No other coin of this type has been sold in nearly 20 years -- don’t miss this opportunity!
