On September 12th, 1962 then-President John F. Kennedy gave a rousing speech outlining the United States’ goal of being the first Nation to get a man on the moon. He charged, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too"

Unfortunately, the President would not see the extraordinary results of his call to action for the American Nation, but on July 20th, 1969, just short of seven years later, the first men, American men, would travel 230,000 miles to the moon to explore its then unknown surface. This achievement was not just a pivotal triumph for the United States, but for all of humanity. It stoked the imaginations of generations around the world and acted as a shining example of mankind’s potential. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Mints from around the world are releasing outstanding commemorative coins which honor the historic moment so you, and your collection, can join in on the celebration.

Robbins Medal Commemoratives

Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Robbins Medals

We partnered with the Armstrong family to offer commemorative medals that were based off the original Apollo 11 Robbins Medallions that were sent into space along with the crew. Since the Apollo 7 mission, medallions that were designed with the input of the crew were created by the Robbins Company and only available to the Astronauts and those who worked at the Astronaut Flight Office (AFO). They would be sent with the Astronauts off into the last great frontier. With the use of the original dies that struck the 1969 Robbins Medals, GovMint.com was able to create new dies that then struck the stunning commemorative medals we are offering today.

The obverse features the insignia of the mission, a symbolic image showing an “Eagle,” which was also the name of the lunar module that carried the crew to the surface, landing on the moon. This is where the phrase the “Eagle has landed” comes from. The Earth appears small but detailed in the background. The reverse carries the names of the Astronauts and the date of that the mission, “launched,” “landed,” and “returned.” The medals are about authentic as they come and are available in a variety of metals, including an out of this world space-flown alloy, and at various price points.

U.S. Mint 50th Anniversary Commemoratives

The United States Mint released a gorgeous commemorative program to celebrate the uniquely American achievement of landing a man on the moon. These commemorative coins mark just the second time ever that the Mint has released curved coins. Their curved shape serves to augment both the obverse, which features an impression of the “one small step” on the lunar surface, and especially the reverse design, which is a rendition of a famous image “Buzz Aldrin on the Moon,” which thanks to the coins’ curve, appears as if it is being viewed through the visor of an astronaut.

The program includes seven different commemorative coins in various metals, and denominations, including silver dollar, clad half dollar, and gold $5 options, as well as a particularly impressive 5 oz. proof option. The 5 oz. proof is the first 5 oz. commemorative coin ever released by the United States Mint.

Canada is also getting in on the 50th Anniversary celebration with their release of a 1 oz. Silver Proof and a 1 oz. Gold Proof Coin. Particularly appropriate, because it was the Canadian-made legs of the lunar module which would be the first parts of it to touch the surface of the moon.

The reverse of the coin is convex and allows the image of Neil Armstrong standing in front of the Lunar lander, and the background of the Lunar surface, to give dimension to the iconic roundness of the moon. The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse. Both faces feature a gorgeous proof finish that allows for a stunning contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices.

Charlie Duke Autographed Labels

To compliment some of these out of this world designs, we will be offering select inventory in our exclusive Charlie Duke Signed label. Charlie Duke was the CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) on the Apollo 11 program, so he was the sole voice that Armstrong and the rest of the crew heard from Mission control during the first moon walk. Duke would go on to work on numerous missions and would eventually get the chance to visit the moon himself on the Apollo 16 Mission years later. Making him one of 12 men, of which only 6 are still alive today, to walk on the surface of the moon.  We had the fortune to procure a number of hand-signed specially designed NGC labels featuring his authentic signature with a suited-up Astronaut on the cratered surface of the moon, all exclusive to GovMint.com.

Barbados 50th Anniversary Spherical Commemorative

Barbados, one of the numerous countries enraptured by the Apollo 11 Mission. In fact, they were one of seventy-three countries around the world that contributed to the “Goodwill Message,” a collection of statements recorded on a tiny disc, that was left on the moon by the Apollo mission as a record of their success.

The other premier Australian Mint, the Perth Mint, has released a lovely tribute to the Moon Landing and Australia’s role in transmitting the first moon walk to people all over the world. The Austria Mint released a truly unique coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the successful Apollo 11 Mission in 2019.
