Australia Pays Homage to One of Germany’s Most Famous Monuments

The site for the 49th World Money Fair in 2020, Berlin’s Estrel Convention Center is just a quick 30-minute drive from the Brandenburg Gate. The short drive weaves through streets lined with shops, apartments and businesses that seem so new and fresh one would never have guessed that just two decades earlier the city was divided by the Cold War and the oppressive Berlin Wall that incorporated the Brandenburg Gate into its scheme to keep East and West divided.

Struck in one full ounce of highly pure 99.9% silver, this legal-tender one-dollar coin’s simple-yet-poignant design shows the Brandenburg Gate on the left side of the coin, its grand Quadriga statue crowning the six-columned monument. To the right is Australia’s familiar Kookaburra bird resting on a branch with its head turned to look at the gate. The beautiful image is a sight to behold!

The Brandenburg Gate is the place in 1963 where President John F. Kennedy made one of his most celebrated speeches before a crowd of more than 120,000 when he proclaimed, “Ich bin ein Berliner” (I am a Berliner) in response to the construction of the Berlin Wall two years earlier. It’s also the place in 1987 where President Ronald Reagan thundered, “Mr. Gorbachev: Tear… Down… This… Wall!”
