2020 Australia $2 2-oz Silver Voyage of Discovery Endeavor Antiqued Coin
Take the Wheel Aboard the Ship That Discovered Australia
When British Royal Navy Captain James Cook spotted the east coast of Australia and landed near present-day Sydney in 1770, it set in motion an epoch that has made Australia what it is today. To commemorate the 250th Anniversary of Captain Cook’s historic voyage, the world-renowned Perth Mint announced in 2020 that it is releasing a series of “Voyage of Discovery” coins, each paying tribute to the expedition’s legacy for exploration, science and reconciliation.
In this release, you’ll see a portrait of Captain Cook and his famous ship, the HMB Endeavor as it sails across the Pacific Ocean in search of a significant land mass Europeans believed existed in the southern hemisphere. Struck in two ounces of 99.99% pure silver, this magnificent coin was struck in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition and was augmented with a special antiqued finish. This unique finish gives the coin a vintage aged look and allows you to handle it without fear of damaging it.
The coin’s exquisite detail expertly showcases not just designs of Captain Cook and the Endeavor, but a wide range of Australian themes, including a gold-colored ship’s wheel at the center that actually spins! Also depicted are a sun dial, navigational tools and the Banksia flower named after the expedition’s naturalist Joseph Banks, who made notes of so many previously unknown botanical specimens that Cook named the area Botany Bay.
Each coin is dual dated 1770 - 2020 and will come beautifully displayed in a custom presentation case from the Perth Mint that has a clear lit for easy viewing. The case will be packaged inside a colorful shipper and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
With a low maximum mintage of just 1,770 two-ounce silver coins already being announced as being sold out at the mint, the odds of our limited edition surviving for long seem remote. Don’t miss the boat, add this Silver Voyage of Discovery Coin to your collection today!
