On May 15, 1945 Edward “Ted” Kenna had had enough. He and his mates were pinned down by withering machine gun fire from Japanese bunkers in New Guinea’s jagged north coast that had reduced his unit from 11 men to four. In an act of sheer guts, Kenna rose up while bullets whizzed by his face, chest and legs and calmly picked off three enemy gunners with stunning accuracy. Kenna’s act of bravery earned him Australia’s Victoria Cross.

Kenna’s story is just one of many tales of bravery exhibited by the Australian military during World War II where more than a million Australians served in uniform.
