Star Dreaming: The Shark in the Stars

Each year in late July or early August, farmers in Australia begin planting fruits and vegetables like bananas, sugar cane and sweet potatoes. Centuries ago, the early Aboriginal people knew it was time because the stars of Beizam the shark leveled across the horizon to the north causing the winds to drop. Today we know this constellation as the “Shark in the Stars.” It’s also the latest coin in Australia” Silver Star Dream series available now as a low, limited-edition release.

From the Ancient Astronomers of Aboriginal Australia

Struck in a half-ounce of 99.99% fine silver, this Australian legal-tender silver dollar displays a partially colorized reverse depicting the Shark in the Stars in the night sky. The design is inspired by the seven stars in the Big Dipper and Big Bear (Ursa Major) constellation which make up the body of Beizam the shark. Designed by Torres Strait Dauareb elder and artist Segar Passi, the coin’s oval-shaped colorized section of the coin shows a shark outline containing the stars in the night sky. Below is a young farmer planting rows of crops with the words “THE SHARK IN THE STARS” superimposed within the rows.

Among the world’s first astronomers, Aboriginal Australians recount many stories associated with the stars and night skies that carry meanings which probe deep into their laws, culture and social structures. During Australia’s planting season the waters of the Torres Strait become calm and a grease called “Beizam aw id” — “when the shark liver has melted on the sea” — forms on the surface of the sea. This is also a dangerous time to travel across the Torres Strait as it is shark-mating season making it a very treacherous time to tempt fate with excursions in these waters.
