Mysterious Medal Lost & Found, then Sold for a World Record Price
America’s 250th Birthday Celebration Continues with the Paris Mint’s
Fifth Release of Restruck Historical U.S. Medals
Honoring General Morgan’s Decisive Victory at the Battle of Cowpens during the
American Revolutionary War by Recreating the 1789 Congressional Medal!
The Mysterious Story of the Battle of Cowpens Medal
The Daniel Morgan at Cowpens medal holds a storied history deeply intertwined with the American Revolutionary War. Commissioned by Congress the original medals were struck in 1789 at the Paris Mint. Those medals, crafted by renowned French artist Augustin Dupré, symbolized gratitude for Morgan's strategic brilliance and marked a significant moment in the fledgling nation's struggle for independence.
When Morgan died in 1802, his grandson inherited his medal. However, the medal's journey took an unexpected turn when it was stolen from a Pittsburgh bank vault in 1818. In 1839, in an effort to replace the lost original, the Philadelphia Mint undertook the task of restriking the medal. Daniel Morgan's grandson, General George Washington Morgan, played a pivotal role in the process of recreating the medal. As a prominent military figure himself, General Morgan possessed both a deep familial connection to the original recipient of the medal and a profound understanding of its historical significance. His involvement in the restriking project likely stemmed from a desire to honor his grandfather's legacy and preserve the memory of the pivotal Battle of Cowpens.
The saga, it turned out, had only just begun. Congress agreed to strike a replacement medal and presented it to Morgan’s great-grandson in 1841. Financier J.P. Morgan, who mistakenly believed he was related to General Morgan, acquired the medal around 1885. After that, experts believed the replacement medal was lost or melted down.

Medal Sells for a World Record Price!
The original medal is still lost to time but in 2022, after going missing for more than a century, the replacement medal mysteriously resurfaced when an anonymous individual consigned it to Stack’s Bowers, an auction house that specializes in coins, currency, tokens and medals. It arrived in its original red leather U.S. Mint case, nestled inside a purple crushed velvet interior. This unique piece sold for $960,000, a world record for an American historical medal. The modern coins we are offering commemorate this iconic design.
America’s 250th birthday party continues with this release from the Paris Mint of a re-strike of the Congressional medal honoring General Morgan and the Battle of Cowpens during the American Revolutionary War.
Leading up to America’s 250th Birthday (2026), the Paris Mint is celebrating over 250 years of French support for the Founding Fathers of the United States by issuing a series of French legal-tender coins based on historic medals which the Paris Mint struck in revolutionary times.
This 2024 issue commemorates a medal designed by French artist Augustin Dupré and struck at Paris Mint under the supervision of Benjamin Franklin in 1789, intended to honor the battle that is considered by many to be the first conflict to have broken the British forces.

Created Using the Original 1789 Dies
The Battle of Cowpens Medal design has never appeared on a legal-tender coin—until now! To produce these coins, Paris Mint’s engraving team worked directly with the historical tools dated back to 1789. To start the process, Paris Mint’s talented team of engravers poured white resin on the ORIGINAL dies, which were then used to obtain a negative mold. After pouring plaster cast into the negative mold, the detailing and removing of historical blemishes were worked into the plaster by hand. Engraving was then carried out digitally using laser scanning of the plaster, thus obtaining a new die identical to the historical medal.
Struck in 99.9% Gold and Silver
Choose yours struck in one ounce of 99.9% gold (200€ France legal tender), or 500 grams or two ounces of 99.9% fine silver (250€ and 25€ legal tender respectively).
Spectacular Revolutionary War-Era Design
Just like the original medal, the designs on these coins are considered to awe-inspiring. The reverse depicts General Daniel Morgan, in the saddle and pointing forward with his sword, leading his soldiers into battle. The Cowpens flag flies behind him at the front of his troops, who carry their muskets with bayonets fixed. A native ally stabs a fallen British cavalryman in the lower left, while other British troops, one mounted, scramble. A British flag and smoke rise from the left. The legend at the top VICTORIA LIBERTATIS VINDEX means “Victory is Liberty's defender.” Below the image, FVGATIS CAPTIS AVT CAESIS AD COWPENS HOSTIBVS XVII. JAN. MDCCLXXXI means "The enemy chased, captured, or killed at the Battle of Cowpens, January 17, 1781;" and DUPRE INV ET F means "Dupre conceived and made it.”
The obverse depicts an Indian Princess in her traditional garb and holding her traditional shield, who crowns. Morgan with a laurel wreath. Morgan bows slightly, his sword grounded, with the rural scene of battle seen behind him. Beneath the image are the words COMITIA AMERICANA, meaning “American Congress”, and around the periphery DANIELI MORGAN DUCI EXERCITUS means "Daniel Morgan, head of the army."

High Relief, Antiqued Finish!
These coins are struck in High Relief, and also exhibit a unique antiqued finish to resemble the original medals. Typically applied by hand—which means no two coins will look alike—an antiqued finish gives extra depth to each coin’s design.
