Slow and Steady Means Extremely Limited Mintages
One of the biggest changes the minters at the Winnipeg facility had to make was the speed at which they worked. Striking Burnished Gold & Silver Maple Leafs takes a lot more work, and a lot more time, than standard circulating coinage. Rather than the hundreds of strikes per minute they were used to, the minters were able to strike less than 20 collectible coins in the same time period due to the quality and level of detail required.
In addition, the special high-pressure mint press used for striking these more detailed coins had to be set up in a separate, smaller room to protect the condition of the coins—a far cry from the large open space with multiple presses and dozens of people they were used to.
As a result, only 400 One-Ounce Gold and 10,000 One-Ounce Silver Burnished Maple Leafs were struck by the Winnipeg facility with the special “W” mint mark!
