In 2012, lawmakers in Canada showed that they are less squeamish about their attachment to their country’s one-cent piece and voted to stop striking the coin. One-cent pennies can still be accepted in Canada as legal tender and in electronic transactions, but merchants don’t have to accept them, and a shopper’s bill is rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents.
