The American Gold Eagle is the world's most recognizable gold bullion coin. Backed by the United States government for weight and purity, coins in the series feature what is widely recognized as one the most beautiful design in the history of American numismatics. The coin is issued in four sizes, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz, and each piece is struck from .9167 fine gold.

2021 marks an exciting year for the American Gold Eagle because while early issues in 2021 will feature the original Family of Eagles reverse design that has appeared on this series since its inception, this year a new reverse design will appear for the first time in the series' over 30 year history!

The American Gold Eagle Series

President Ronald Reagan signed the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. In doing so, he paved the way for the United States to become a leader in modern bullion. The following year, the Gold Eagle Series made its debut. While popular for its U.S. government backing, the series was supplemented with the 1 oz Gold Buffalo in 2006 so that collectors had a .9999 fine American gold coin as an option.

Since the Gold Eagle series began in 1986, each coin has borne the same obverse and reverse designs, but that is changing in mid-2021 when Miley Busiek's Family of Eagles design will transition to a new design crafted by Jennie Norris. She is part of the Mint's Artistic Infusion Program (AIP).

2021 American Gold Eagle Designs

The iconic Double Eagle design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens will retain its place on the obverse. Liberty strikes a confident pose in which she faces the holder with her torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The Capitol Dome is rendered in miniature in the lower left, while the morning sun's rays spread out in the background, making the central figure appear larger than life. Fifty stars spread throughout the rim. "LIBERTY" is inscribed at the top, and the date "2021" is included to the right.

The new reverse design features a close-up look at America's national bird. The bald eagle appears fierce and determined. The two statutory mottoes, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," are inscribed just above the bird's head. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," spreads throughout the top half of the rim, while the coin's respective face value and weight are noted on the bottom half of the edge.
