The Burnished Gold Eagle is set for its first ever redesign in 2021. The bullion and proof versions of the coin will be struck in two types this year, but since the burnished version will not be out until after the new design debuts, only a Type-2 burnished coin will be released. Each piece will be struck from 1 oz of .9167 fine gold. The coins will be struck on burnished blanks and have matte finishes. As this coin will be among the first with the new Type-2 design, it is sure to be of interest for collectors in years to come. Other coin highlights include a modified obverse design that was updated to include legacy details based on the original bronze cast, and the inclusion of an anti-counterfeit reeded edge variation.

History of the Burnished American Gold Eagle Series

The Burnished Gold Eagle debuted in 1986 on the 20th anniversary of its bullion and proof counterparts. For its first three years, the coin was struck in the same four sizes as the bullion and proof, 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. In 2009 and 2010, the burnished version of the coin was not released. After a two-year hiatus, the series resumed in 2011, issued in just the 1-ounce size. The United States Mint has released the 1 ounce version of the coin every year since then, but the fractional versions have never resumed.

2021 Burnished Gold Eagle Obverse Design

The iconic Saint-Gaudens design will return to the obverse, albeit with slight modifications as the United States Mint returned to its historical assets resulting in a design that closer matches Saint-Gaudens’ original vision. Widely considered the most beautiful design in the history of American numismatics, the image features Liberty standing facing the holder against a background of the rays of the morning sun. She holds her torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, and she is joined by a miniature rendering the Capitol Dome in the lower left.

Fifty stars represent the current states along the rim, an adaptation of the forty-six that appeared in Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s original design. “LIBERTY” is inscribed at the top, and the date, “2021,” is noted in the lower right.

2021 Burnished Gold Eagle Reverse Design

The new Type-2 reverse design was created by Jennie Norris and sculpted by Renata Gordon. The design features a closeup look at a bald eagle in left-side profile. Above the bird’s head are the two statutory mottoes, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s face value, “50 DOLLARS,” and its weight, “1 OZ. FINE GOLD.”
