2021 American Gold Eagle Proof Coins with New Reverse Design

The American Gold Eagle Proof is an annual favorite among many collectors. Featuring what is widely considered the most beautiful design in the history of American coinage, the series combines America's rich numismatic history with the high-quality standards of the modern United States Mint. The proofs are struck from .9167 fine gold in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes. Each one bears the "W" mint mark of the West Point Mint.

The 2021-W Proof American Gold Eagles will feature the new type-2 reverse design which marks the first major design change in the over 35 year history of the series.

History of the Series

The American Gold Eagle made its debut in 1986 following President Ronald Reagan's signature on the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. With it came the inaugural proof version of the coin. Since then, the two have become leading choices among collectors. The coin designs have remained consistent for the full 35 years of the series, with the iconic Saint-Gaudens design on the obverse and an eagle family design by Miley Busiek on the reverse. The United States Mint was is planning to change the reverse design of the bullion, proof, and burnished issues in the series for the first time in its history in mid-2021.

Early 2021 issues will feature the original Family of Eagles design, which means that two 2021 American Gold Eagle designs will be released this year! For more information about this upcoming design change, read this Coin-Authority article here.

2021 American Gold Eagle Proof with New Reverse Designs

Augustus Saint-Gaudens's famous Double Eagle design will remain in place on the obverse. Liberty stands at the center, striking a confident pose as she faces the holder. She holds her torch, a beacon of freedom, in her right hand and an olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace, in her left hand. She appears larger than life thanks to the Capitol Dome's miniature rendering in the lower left and the rays of the rising sun, which spread out behind her. Fifty stars represent the states along the rim. "LIBERTY" is inscribed at the top, and the date is included on the right.

A design by Jeannie Norris replaces Miley Busiek's reverse design. The new design centers around a closeup look at the head of an eagle, which appears determined. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed on the top half of the rim, while inscriptions on the bottom half note the coin's face value and weight. Above the bird's head are the two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST.
