Update from the United States Mint 10/26/2020: Two 2021 American Silver Eagle Reverse Designs

In late October of 2020, the United States Mint announced that they will issue Brilliant Uncirculated American Silver Eagles with two reverse designs in 2021. At the start of the year, the Silver Eagle will feature Mercanti's original heraldic eagle reverse design, while Emily Damstra's new reverse design will start appearing on Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagles in mid-2021.

“The Mint will continue to strike and sell bullion coins that feature the original designs until the coins with the new reverse designs are released,”  U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White said Oct. 21.

Update From the United States Mint 10/1/2020: New Silver Eagle Reverse Design Revealed

On October 1, 2020, the United States Mint revealed the new reverse design that will appear on American Silver Eagles starting in mid-2021. The Mint also released some 2021 Brilliant Uncirculated issues featuring John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse design at the start of the year.

The new reverse design offers a fresh perspective on a numismatic icon. The reverse still features a bald eagle, but this time, about to land from a flight. The eagle grasps an oak branch between its claws, perhaps to build its nest. This reverse design was crafted by Emily Damstra, a member of the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program (AIP), and was sculpted by Mint artist Michael Gaudioso.

The obverse design will also carry Adolph Weinman's artist initials, "AW", for the first time in the history of the series.

To celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the first Silver Eagle, the U.S. Mint redesigned the reverse of the series. The famous obverse will remain mostly the same, still bearing Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty design, however his initials will appear on this face of the coin for the first time in the history of the series.

The redesign will include enhanced security features which include an anti-counterfeiting reeeded edge, instituted for the first time on the series.
