Second Release In Historical Instruments Series Celebrates Astronomy’s “Sphere Of Influence”

You don’t see them around much anywhere unless you’re picking through the dusty corners of a museum, but we can still learn a lot from an Armillary Sphere, an ancient astronomical instrument that was introduced in China and Europe several centuries before the birth of Christ. An unusual-looking piece of equipment that was used to demonstrate the movement of the heavenly bodies, Armillary Spheres were mathematical tools that showed how celestial objects revolve around the Earth. The Armillary Sphere once again sees the light of day thanks to this intricately designed coin from Germany’s world-renowned Mayer Mint.

Fantastic Ultra High Relief Astrological Design

The second release in the Historical Instruments series, this fantastic legal-tender $10 coin was minted on behalf of the Cook Islands in two full ounces of highly pure 99.9% fine silver and captures the Historical Instruments theme in stunning detail. The design shows an Armillary Sphere that consists of a sphere with several rings (armillaries) that represent important celestial circles, forming a cage with the Earth in the center. These tools were used mainly by astronomers with Claudius Ptolemy, the noted 2nd-century astronomer and mathematician from Alexandria being perhaps the most famous scientist to put the Armillary Sphere to good use. Ptolemy’s geocentric theory of the universe was accepted as the basis of our understanding of the motions of stars and planets for more than 1,000 years!

Design Created Using CIT Smartminting© Technology

The intricate design is fully realized thanks to the Mayer Mint’s use of Coin Invest Trust (CIT) SmartMinting© technology, the coin depicts the historic instrument in amazing Ultra High Relief detail. The obverse design is no less amazing as it features a portrait of King Charles III surrounded by the earth, sun, moon, stars, and other historical instruments that are or will be part of the series. And, as a final added touch, these coins have been treated with a unique antique finish that adds a depth and dimension that gives them an almost three-dimensional appearance. With their darkened grooves and brushed high points, these incredible coins just beg to be picked up and examined in meticulous detail—and thanks to this Antique finish, you can do just that without risk of damaging your coin! This finish is typically applied by hand, meaning no two coins are exactly alike.
