Spectacular Design! The 80th Anniversary of D-Day from The Royal Mint!

One-Ounce Gold and Five-Ounce Silver Proofs with Perfect Grades!

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, more than 133,000 troops from the United States, the British Commonwealth and their allies, including 18,000 paratroopers, successfully stormed five assault beaches along the Normandy coastline in France, in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The beaches were given the code names UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, and SWORD. By gaining a foothold on mainland Europe, the Allies were able to open a second front against Germany that helped turn the tide of the Second World War.

U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces for Operation OVERLORD, the codename for the Battle of Normandy, played a central role in spearheading the preparations for D-Day. By May 1944, just over a month prior to the invasion, around 1.4 million U.S. servicemen were stationed in the U.K. On May 7, 1945, German General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Reims, France.

This commemorative program from The Royal Mint (TRM) honors the 80th Anniversary of D-Day—a moment made more poignant by the fact that these events will soon move beyond living memory! You and your family will cherish these beautiful coins for generations to come.

Stunning D-Day Design
The reverse of each coin features a design by TRM artist Daniel Thorne, developed with the assistance of the Imperial War Museums, depicting Allied soldiers risking their lives to wade ashore on one of the Beaches of Normandy. Above the soldiers, the date “6 JUNE 1944” is listed, along with the code names of the five beaches Allied forces pummeled on D-Day: “UTAH OMAHA GOLD JUNO SWORD.”

The first definitive portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings is on the obverse. The inscriptions include “CHARLES III DEI. GRA. REX. F. D.” meaning “King Charles III By the grace of God, Defender of the Faith”.

Struck in Pure Gold and Silver
These extraordinary Proofs are available struck in one-ounce of high-purity 99.99% gold (£100 Great Britain legal tender) and one ounce of 99.9% fine silver (£10 legal tender).

Proofs Are Struck to A Higher Standard of Quality
The exquisite proof finish offers a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than coins with non-proof finishes. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck up to six times, unlike non-proofs which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While non-proofs are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, these Proofs are struck individually by highly skilled U.S. Mint artisans creating numismatic masterpieces.

Certified Flawless PF70 and First Day of Issue by NGC

Proofs and coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. There is no higher grade, and that’s what you have here. These 2024 D-Day 80th Anniversary Proofs have been certified as perfect Proof-70 (PF70) by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), one of the top coin-grading services in the world. Each Proof also carries a First Day of Issue (FDI) designation—which means these Proofs were purchased within one day of the first day the mint made them available for sale. First Day of Issue proofs are sought-after because they are fresh and sharp, and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.

These Proofs are not just the best of the best, they’re the first of the best.

Low Worldwide Mintages
These 2024 Great Britain D-Day 80th Anniversary Proofs have limited worldwide mintages—just 510 of the one-ounce gold coins and just 506 of the one-ounce silver coins were authorized. Additionally, all the Proofs here are in perfect PF70 condition, designated as First Day of Issue, and will be slabbed with a special label commemorating Great Britain, showing an image of the iconic Tower Bridge in London.
