110-Year-Old Silver Coins from Germany

Here’s a vintage coin form the long-ago German Empire struck in highly pure 90% fine silver. This 2 Mark, coin features the portrait of Prussia’s Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was the last German Emperor from 1888-1918. The oldest grandchild of Great Britain’s Queen Victoria, Wilhelm is credited with strengthening the German Empire’s navy. He is also, however, infamous for his inept foreign policy decisions that have led many historians to believe his actions and statements were responsible for the outbreak of World War I.

Each of the coins available here were struck between 1891 and 1913 prior to the outbreak of WWI, making them at least 110 years old! The reverse of each coin features the German Imperial Eagle. Your coin will arrive in Circulated condition—meaning it was carried in the pockets of citizens across the empire.

Wilhelm’s Inglorious Fate

Wilhelm eventually abdicated in 1918 during the final days of World War I. Unlike his unfortunate cousin Czar Nicholas II of Russia, Wilhelm was not executed. Instead, he lived in exile until 1941, witnessing the Great Depression, the rise of Adolf Hitler & Germany’s Nazi party, and the early years of World War II. A swaggering militarist no more, his abdication was announced on November 9, 1918, before he had actually consented to it!

Wilhelm lived out his live in luxurious exile, mostly forgotten and universally reviled by past and present leaders. Thankfully for collectors, his coins live on, giving us all a window into what a person who was by all accounts a highly intelligent man always looking for respect—and never getting it—from his English relatives.
