End of World War II 75th Anniversary Gold Coin and Silver Medal

To this day, World War II remains the bloodiest conflict in human history. Over 70 million civilians and members of the military lost their lives in Europe and the Pacific. The horrors went beyond even those of conventional war. Mercifully, the war drew to a close in 1945, first in Europe and then in the Pacific. Now, the United States Mint marks the 75th anniversary of end of the Second World War with a gold coin and a silver medal. The gold coin will be struck from 1/2 oz of .9999 fine, 24-karat gold at the West Point Mint, represented by its “W” mintmark. The silver medal will be struck at the Philadelphia Mint.

2020 End of World War II Gold Coin & Silver Medal Obverse Design

The gold coin and silver medal will share common designs.

Designed by Phebe Hemphill and sculpted by Ronald Sanders, the obverse is based on a 1945 edition of the Great Seal of the United States. In the design, an eagle in flight faces left while clutching an olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace. “WORLD WAR II” is inscribed between the branch and the bird’s outstretched wing. “LIBERTY” and “1945,” the year World War II ended, are marked along the rim.

2020 End of World War II Gold Coin and Silver Medal Reverse Design

The reverse design, created by Renata Gordon and sculpted by Donna Weaver, harks back to the 1945 Victory Medal. The sun on that medal was just beginning to rise. For these anniversary issues, the sun has risen.

The sun's rays shine down on an olive branch. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is inscribed along the rim. In the case of the gold coin, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “75TH ANNIVERSARY,” “2020,” “AU 24K 1/2 OZ,” and “$25” are also included. Of those, just “75TH ANNIVERSARY” is included on the silver medal.
