1796–1823 Spain Silver 2 Reales F–XF
America’s First Silver Quarter
The United States Mint didn’t open its doors until 1792, and even then, it took a few decades to produce enough coinage to meet demand. Coins such as this Spanish 2 Reales were widely accepted in America. That’s what you have here. A coin nearly 200 years old, struck in Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, or Peru (mint our choice) in 89.6% fine silver. Each coin, dated 1796 to 1823 (our choice), is in Fine to Extremely Fine (F–XF) condition meaning it circulated in commerce.
Spanish Coin That Was Official United States Legal Tender
During the American Revolution, the newly-formed United States of America had no currency of its own. To solve this problem, the Continental Congress designated Spanish coins as official legal tender. This Spanish silver 2 Reales coin was worth one fourth of a Spanish 8 Reales silver dollar. That makes this coin America’s first silver quarter! Not only was this coin among the first currency of the United States, but it was also accepted as payment for goods and services as late as the 1870s—even though Spanish coins stopped being considered legal-tender in 1857!
What was it used to buy? Let your imagination wander! This is your chance to take home a piece of U.S. colonial history at an outstanding price. Secure yours now in Fine to Extremely Fine (F–XF) condition before they’re gone from our vault!
