Special 225th Anniversary Release Now Available
When our nation was young, there was no system by which to create our own coinage. For decades, gold and silver coins from other nations traded hands in commerce as official U.S. legal tender.

Then, in 1792, the United States of America began striking its own coins. However, it would not be until three years later, in 1795, that the first gold coins of the United States were minted. These coins bore sculptor Robert Scot’s depiction of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, surrounded by 15 stars representing the number of states at the time. On the reverse was an eagle with its wings spread, a laurel wreath in its beak and an olive branch in its talons.

Struck for just three years from 1795 to 1798, the $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle (the $10 coin was referred to as a “Gold Eagle”) represents America’s earliest interpretations of Miss Liberty on gold coinage. More than that—the $5 Gold Capped Bust Liberty was America’s First Gold Coin.

Official Smithsonian® Release
2020 marks the 225th anniversary of America’s First Gold Coin, the 1795 $5 Capped Bust Half Eagle. To commemorate this anniversary, the Smithsonian® has authorized a limited release of gold and silver proofs featuring the original design. The slight changes include dual dates of 1795 and 2020 and the Smithsonian’s sun logo on the reverse.

Of the original 8,707-coin mintage of 1795 $5 Capped Bust Half Eagles, it’s estimated that only around 520 coins still exist in any condition—including an example located in the Smithsonian’s National Numismatic Collection in Washington, D.C. To create these special proofs, high-resolution images were taken of that very coin, which then served as the basis for the dies created to strike this limited release.

A special mint assayer hallmark can also be found on each commemorative to denote the metal and fineness. This mark is located on one of the olive branch leaves carried by the eagle on the reverse.

Struck with a beautiful Proof Finish, both the silver and gold reproductions display incredibly sharp details, with frosted devices and mirrored fields.
