A Tale of Two U.S. Mint Designers

John Mercanti and Donald Everhart. Two titans of the coin world. As Chief Engraver and Lead Sculptor-Engraver, respectively, each artist has designed and sculpted more than 100 coins and medals for the United States Mint, making them the two most prolific artists in mint history. When Mercanti retired in 2010, Everhart took center stage until his own retirement from the mint in 2017.

These two numismatic legends have been friends for years. And yet, they have never collaborated together on a single piece. That is… until now.

John Mercanti
John served as the 12thChief Engraver of the United States Mint, and has one of the most storied careers in mint history. He served as an engraver-sculptor for 37 years, surpassed only by George T. Morgan, William Barber and Frank Gasparro. Mercanti also crafted more coin and medal designs than any other designer in the history of the U.S. Mint, including the original reverse of the famous American Eagle Silver Dollar.

Since his retirement from the U.S. Mint in 2010, Mercanti has continued to work, crafting designs for the popular Wedge-Tailed Eagle series at Australia’s Perth Mint, as well as sculpting the unrealized designs of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, perhaps the greatest American coin designer of all time.

Donald Everhart
Donald served as the U.S. Mint’s Lead Sculptor-Engraver from 2004 until 2017. During his time there he worked closely with Mercanti as well as artists such as Phoebe Hemphill. Over the course of his career, Everhart has sculpted close to 1,500 coin and medal designs for various world and private mints, including more than 100 for the U.S. Mint, putting him second to only John Mercanti in terms of sheer number of U.S. coin and medal designs.

Some of Everhart’s best-known U.S. Mint designs include the reverse of the 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame series, which received the Krause Publications’ Coin of the Year Award in 2016; the reverse of the 2015 March of Dimes Silver Dollar, which also won a Coin of the Year Award, and the 2018 World War I Centennial Silver Dollar, which he sculpted from an existing design.

The Flames of Freedom
For this monumental release, each artist has contributed their own design. The obverse depicts Mercanti’s beautiful interpretation of Lady Liberty holding a torch and sword.

“For a long time, I had wanted to use my oldest granddaughter for something,” Mercanti said. “She was 18 or 19 at the time. I always said that she would make a great Liberty if I had to do one. So, when this project came up, I dressed her up, took some pictures and did what I needed to do. I needed to adjust the figure a little to look more like I thought Liberty would look, but I just had a great time doing it.”

The design originally appeared as the reverse of Canada’s 2019 Peace and Liberty Medal, where it was struck in standard relief. The Flames of Freedom Proof marks its first-ever striking in Ultra High Relief—just as Mercanti envisioned it.

The reverse depicts Everhart’s powerful image of a pair of flaming Torches of Freedom joining their two flames into one. It’s a beautiful “handing of the torch” moment just like the one that took place between Mercanti and Everhart upon Mercanti’s retirement from the United States Mint.

“When I thought about it, this [design] is really appropriate for the times we’re living in now,” said Everhart. “Because we have a very polarized society – and if both the Red and the Blue could get together and make one flame out of two, it would really benefit the country. That theme is subtle, but I think it’s there.”

Reverse Proof Condition
In addition to its fantastic double-sided Ultra High Relief strike, the Flames of Freedom Proofs come in Reverse Proof condition, with mirrored devices and frosty fields. The effect is stunning—and no proof is more deserving of that then the first-ever collaboration between these two former U.S. Mint artists.
