Shipwreck Treasure From The "Indian Titanic"
During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy deployed several submarines to the Indian Ocean in an attempt to disrupt Allied shipping between Europe and the Dutch East Indies. Among those ships that were sunk was the SS Tilawa, an ocean liner owned by the British India Steam Navigation Company. The 10,000-ton steam passenger liner was torpedoed and sunk by Japanese submarine Matsu on November 23, 1942 while in route from Bombay, India to Durban, South Africa. In addition to 280 people killed in the attack, more than 2,300 bars of silver bullion were lost. This silver was on its way to the South African Mint where it was to be struck into coinage. Today, that silver cargo is valued at more than $43 million and was at the center of a legal battle between salvagers and the government of South Africa.
Authentic Silver Bullion From The Wreck Of The SS Tilawa
Nicknamed the "Indian Titanic" in reference to its great loss of life similar to the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912, the Tilawa and its treasure was discovered by marine salvagers in 2017 and now some of those genuine silver bullion bars are being made available for a limited time. Here you can secure a full-size bar struck in 1128.8 ounces of highly pure 99.9% fine silver—that's more than 70 pounds (70.55 pounds) of high-grade silver bullion! But it didn't become available without a fight…
UK Supreme Court Torpedoes Salvage Company's Claim
The legal battle started after Argentum Exploration, a marine salvage company, secretly found the wreck at a depth of about 1.6 miles about halfway between the coast of India and the Horn of Africa. Meanwhile, the South African government had contracted with another salvage outfit to retrieve the treasure and refused to pay Argentum a recovery fee. A 2020 court case initially ruled in favor of Argentum, but in May 2024, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom reversed the ruling, upholding South Africa's claim that it had sovereign immunity against a salvage repayment claim. These bars, now in South Africa's possession, are being made on a first-come, first-served basis.
