Shipwrecked Gold From The RMS Douro!
On March 31, 1882, the RMS Douro cast off from Lisbon on the last leg of its voyage to the port of Southampton. She never docked. On the evening of April 1, the officer on watch assumed the officers on the bridge would see the light from an approaching ship, so didn't bring it to their attention. By the time he alerted the bridge it was too late and the Spanish ship, Yrurac Bat, hit Douro's starboard side, gouging a large gash in the hull. Just 30 minutes later, she sank. Seventeen people, including six passengers, lost their lives, but all the children were saved. Over a century later, the Douro's valuable cargo of British Gold Sovereigns was resurrected by a marine salvage expert.
