Today, each Yeoman must be between 40 and 55 years of age and must have at least 22 years of military service. The initials ER on today’s uniforms stand for Elizabetha Regina (Regina is Latin for queen) in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.

While the Yeomen no longer receive part of their pay in beef, there are other perks to the job. One such perk dates back to 1879 when distiller James Burrough created a new gin recipe. In an early masterstroke of branding, Burrough decided to give his new product the title of Beefeater after the Tower of London’s red-uniformed Yeoman Warders. It embodied a strong traditional idea of London and proved to be a distinctive and unmistakable symbol. According to legend, Burroughs sought permission from the Chief Yeoman to use the name for his dry London gin. The Chief Yeoman agreed on the condition that each Yeoman received a bottle of gin on his birthday – a tradition that has been maintained to this day!
