The House of Hanover is a German royal house that ruled Hanover, Great Britain, and Ireland from the 17th through 20th centuries. George V renamed Great Britain’s Royal House to Windsor in 1917 as anti-German sentiment reached a boiling point during World War I.

The White Horse of Hanover appeared on the Royal Coat of Arms through the reigns of Georges I, II and II. When Queen Victoria ascended to the throne it ended the personal union between the United Kingdom and Hanover and the horse was removed.
