Third Time's the Charm for Great Britain’s Official Brexit Coin

Ever since June 23, 2016 when citizens of Great Britain voted to withdraw from the European Union, plans have been in the works to release special commemorative coins to pay tribute to the actual exit date. But thanks to squabbling politicians, missed deadlines and a change in prime minister, it’s taken almost four years for Brexit to finally happen. Along the way, The Royal Mint has tried not once, but three times to strike commemorative coinage – and now it’s finally happened!

On January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom officially withdrew from the European Union. To commemorate the milestone event, the Royal Mint released this gleaming 50-Pence 8-gram Cupronickel (CuNi) coin. The seven-sided heptagon-shaped piece depicts Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse while the reverse features the official Brexit date of “31 January 2020” below the words “Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations” in honor of the peaceful withdrawal from the EU.

This coin marks the third time the British government planned to mint commemorative 50-pence Brexit coins. The first attempt was made to coincide with the original March 29, 2019 exit date, but those plans were shelved after Brexit Day was pushed back to October 31, 2019. Leading up to the second attempt, The Royal Mint struck around one million coins before Brexit was once again postponed. Those coin were melted down and recycled after the delay. Following the decisive victory by Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party’s in the December general election of 2019, the path was finally cleared for Brexit – and for these coins! Now, finally, the coins have been struck and released to eager collectors around the world.

Each coin comes in original Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition with razor-sharp details that are as fresh and crisp as the day the coin left the mint. Each will also come housed in an illustrated presentation folder with the words “A VOTE TO LEAVE AND A NEW ERA” printed on the front. The card also serves as the coin’s certificate of Authenticity.
