The design is an impressive portrayal of one of Rome's greatest enemies. At an early age, Arminius was sent to Rome as symbol of fealty to the Roman Empire and was educated in the art and strategies of Roman warfare. He was sent back to Germany where he was to lay the groundwork for a Roman invasion. Instead, Arminius secretly plotted with the Germanic tribes to defeat the invasion. The Roman armies led by General Publius Quinctilius Varus were ambushed, obliterated and were unable to gain any momentum as Arminius used his Roman training to anticipate the Romans' every move. Upon hearing of the annihilation of his troops, Emperor Augustus was so shaken that he stood butting his head against the walls of his palace, repeatedly shouting: "Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!" Some 20,000 Roman troops were killed, those that were spared were sold into slavery with only a few survivors escaping back to Roman territory.
