Fly High With These World War I German Marks
In 1914, World War I erupted across Europe. Nearly a year later, German pilots had gained air supremacy thanks to their planes – the first aircraft fitted with synchronized machine guns that fired bullets through the plane’s spinning propeller. Germany’s Flying Circus led by Manfred von Richthofen – the legendary Red Baron – inflicted punishing losses on Allied airmen throughout 1915.
At the same time, Germans faced their own punishing battles on the home front where, in an effort to support the war effort, Germany pulled its silver coinage out of circulation. Faced with a shortage of currency and hard fast wealth, many Germans began hoarding their silver coins – so much so that early in the war coins like these Silver One Mark and Half Mark coins struck in 1915 virtually disappeared, making this date significant not only for the exploits of Germany’s flying aces but for the paucity of coins in circulation.
Both coins in this 1915 Germany Silver 1 & 1/2 Mark Two-Piece Set showcase their denomination within a wreath and a Crowned Imperial Eagle on the obverse. Each coin was struck in 90% fine silver and comes in Fine to Very Fine (F-VF) condition – a remarkable grade since Germany’s economy was shattered after the war. People who had hoarded these coins more often than not were forced to use them simply to survive from one day to the next.
Your set will come beautifully housed in a custom-designed card and holder. Don’t miss your chance to own a historic piece of World War I history; secure your set today!
