1911 Germany-Württemberg 3 Mark Anniversary Silver VF
When William Met Charlotte
The Kingdom of Württemberg was a German state established in 1805 that existed for more than a century until 1918 when it fell victim to the catastrophic upheaval caused by World War I. Württemberg’s last ruler was King William II, a popular sovereign who often ventured out among his subjects without the benefit of bodyguards. Devasted by the death of his only son, his first wife and a still born child, William carried on and in 1886 wed Princess Charlotte of Schaumburg-Lippe. To pay tribute to the 25th anniversary of this union in 1911, Württemberg released this one-year-only Silver Anniversary coin that featured both William and Charlotte.
Historic Connection To The War To End All Wars
Here’s the thing about Württemberg: Despite being its own kingdom, it became a state of the German Reich in 1871, thus severely limiting its sovereignty. In fact, during World War I, William served as Generalfeldmarschall in the German Imperial Army before abdicating in 1918 — the last German ruler to abdicate in the wake of the November Revolution of 1918. Princess Charlotte was not only the last queen of Württemberg, but the last surviving queen of any German state. That makes this vintage coin all the more historic for its connection to the world-shaping events of the original “War To End All Wars.”
