The coins were designed by Natanya van Niekerk, the Chief Artist and current Deputy General Manager of the South African Mint. These coins—the 2011 Meerkat, 2012 Painted Wolf and 2013 Zebra—capture the beauty of African wildlife in exquisite detail. Described as the Michelangelo of modern coin design, van Niekerk has received a total of 11 numismatic coin design awards including the 2011 Meerkat, which won the Most Beautiful Gold Coin Award in the Coin of the Year (COTY) awards.
