The Europa Star program issues legal-tender commemorative coins that celebrate European identity. These 2017 releases, struck by the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint), feature France’s Age of Iron and Glass through three main symbols -- the profile of poet and novelist Victor Hugo, best known for the novels Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame; the Eiffel Tower, built between 1887 and 1889 as a wrought-iron icon of progress and technology; and Liberty herself, leading the people with flag held high.
As with all commemoratives struck for the Europa Star program, the obverse features a large star, the year’s theme, date, mint marks, issuing country and Europa herself. Struck in five ounces of 99.9% fine gold, these coins carry a legal-tender value of 500 Euro and were struck in very limited numbers.
