1908–1938 5₵ & $2.50 Native American 2-pc Set XF–BU
Two-Piece Set Featuring Actual Native Americans
This two-piece set consists of the first coins to feature Native Americans as they actually looked! Until these coins came along, depictions of Native American were nothing more than Lady Liberty wearing a variety of feathered headdresses. Perhaps after the closing of the west by the end of the 19th Century an early version of “woke” America demanded that a more realistic portrayal of the vanquished “Noble Red Man” appear on its coins. And the “chief” beneficiaries of that movement are these coins—the famed Buffalo Nickel and the famous Incuse Gold Quarter Eagle.
- The obverse design of THE BUFFALO NICKEL, created by James Earle Fraser and struck from 1913 to 1938, is based on three real life chiefs—Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, Two Moons of the Cheyenne and John Big Tree of the Seneca nation. This 1938-D Buffalo Nickel was struck at the Denver Mint during the coin’s last year of issue. It also comes in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition.
- THE $2.50 GOLD INDIAN was designed by Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, who was a student of the famous Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This Quarter Eagle was struck in highly pure 90% fine gold from 1908 to 1929 and features a Native American male chief with a large ceremonial headdress. It’s also one of the few American coins to have an incuse design struck into the coin. The coins we have here range in date from 1908 to 1928 (date our choice) and comes in very nice Extremely Fine (XF) condition.
In addition to the two coins in this set, you’ll also receive a stone arrowhead and an 1850–1889 Bank of America stock certificate. Supplies are limited, so order now!
