1916 Cuba Gold 5 Pesos — Struck in Philadelphia!

Following America’s victory over Spain during the Spanish American War of 1898, Cuba was freed from Spanish control. However, it had no national mint to strike its new native coinage. So, for two years only — in 1915 and 1916 — the Philadelphia Mint struck Gold Pesos for Cuba using the very same planchets that the Mint used to strike U.S. gold coins!

Struck in highly pure 90% fine gold with the image of one of Cuba’s most revered freedom fighters, José Martí, these coins were quickly hoarded by banks and wealthy Cubans. Their limited mintages (only 1,132,000 of this Gold 5 Pesos coin was struck in 1916) meant that few actually ever entered circulation or ended up in the pockets of the Cuban people. But those that did have them often used them to fund their flight to the United States when Fidel Castro brought communism to Cuba in 1959.

The 1916 Cuba 5 Peso Gold coins available here have been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as having come from the famous Government Services Administration (GSA) sale. You can secure yours in About Uncirculated-58 (AU58) condition still with nearly all of its mint luster still present. We have only a few of these coins available, so hurry and order now!
