There Once was a Swiss Miss - She Didn't Yodel - She was Struck in Gold

Heidi may be the most famous young girl from the Swiss Alps, but a century ago she had competition from Helvetia, the female personification of Switzerland similar to Liberty, who symbolizes the United States. In 1897, famous Swiss sculptor Fritz Landry created Switzerland’s most famous and most beautiful gold coin, the 20 Francs “Vreneli.” No one actually knows why the coin is called a Vreneli, but it may have derived from the famous tale of William Tell, in which a character named Vreneli appears. The portrait on the obverse of the coin shows Helvetia, the symbol of Switzerland. She wears braided hair and a necklace of edelweiss, the national flower, and the Alps fill the background to create an ideal image of peaceful and pastoral Switzerland. The reverse shows a shield with the famous Swiss cross. Although it was made from 1897 until 1935, many of these legendary coins were melted over the years for the high gold content. The survivors are increasingly difficult to find, so don’t miss this beautiful Swiss Miss! Each is struck in 90% gold and contains .1867 ounces of pure gold. The spectacular examples you can secure here are in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. And, just as classic U.S. gold coins featuring Liberty are prized among collectors of U.S. coins, so the Helvetia gold coin is a stunning addition to any collection of European gold. Add it to your collection today!
