One Of The Most Beloved Queens Ever!

Coins featuring Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II have been in high demand following her passing, and these one-year-only 5 Shillings Crown coins are not only exquisitely gorgeous, but incredibly scarce, too! They reference the British New York Exhibition held in 1960, and feature a majestic laureate bust of a youthful, almost girlish, Queen Elizbeth II on the obverse–the first time her portrait ever appeared on a Crown coin! In addition to the young portrait of The Queen on the obverse, the coin's reverse featured the same design used on the coronation crown of 1953, but with the date changed. It showed a crown in the center of a cross formed from a rose, shamrock, leek, and thistle. In the angles, there are four shields bearing the arms of Scotland, England, and Ireland.

Prince Philip & The Royal Mint In New York

The British Exhibition was opened in New York on June 10, 1960, at the New York Coliseum by nonother than The Queen's husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who in the opening ceremonies said he hoped the exhibition would enhance friendly relations between the American and British peoples. While there, Price Philip also rubbed shoulders with the likes of Vice President Richard Nixon and New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Amongst other British manufacturers present, the Royal Mint had a booth at the exhibition where Mint staff demonstrated coins being struck. The coin they struck was this 1960 crown, specially designed for the occasion. The coins made at the exhibition were struck using a polished die resulting in a stunning Proof-Like finish. Unsold coins from the exhibition were bagged up and shipped back to Great Britain, a process that resulted in many of the coins still in existence turning up with heavier bag marks than normal issues.
