The Bull Of Clarence Joins Tudor Beasts Collection

Great Britain's Royal Mint continue its series of Tudor Beasts with the third release in the bullion series–the Bull of Clarence. One of the most English and "earthy" of the heraldic symbols, the Bull of Clarence is associated with courage, transformation, and passion. This coin is also the first release in the collection to feature the new official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.

Legendary Symbol Of The Yorkist Kings

This legal tender £25 (twenty-five pounds) coin was struck in a quarter ounce of 99.99% pure gold and shows the Bull of Clarence, the legendary symbol of the Yorkist kings. Introduced by King Edward IV, this fierce and unyielding creature embodied his passion for the throne as he fought with the house of Lancaster during the Wars of the Roses. Holding a shield emblazoned with an instantly recognizable Tudor Rose, the Bull of Clarence has been reimagined for the twenty-first century by artist David Lawrence based on a stone sculpture at Hampton Court Palace. The coin's obverse features the portrait of King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings replacing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away in 2022. The coin also features an edge inscription that reads: "HAMPTON COURT PALACE ROYAL TUDOR BEASTS."

A Heraldic Beast From The House Of Tudor

The Bull of Clarence stands guard along with nine other Tudor heraldic beasts that flank the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace. They were erected by King Henry VIII, who was following the footsteps of his father, Henry VII, by making sure everyone knew it was his divine right to rule. One must also remember this occurred not too long after the War of the Roses when the House of York and the House of Lancaster waged a bloody war to determine the succession of England's monarchy, out of which the Tudor Dynasty was born.
