2024 Great Britain £2 1-oz Silver Lion & Eagle Reverse Proof NGC PF70 First Releases w/Great Britain Label
Royal Mint Mercanti Lion & Eagle Design Returns For 2024
2023 saw the first-ever collaboration between Great Britain’s world-renowned Royal Mint and a former U.S. Mint Engraver when John Mercanti’s Lion & Eagle design was featured on a spectacular series of gold and silver coins. The design which shows the Lion of England sitting alongside the American Bald Eagle returns for a second year on this stunning legal tender £2 (two pounds) coin that was struck in one ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. It also comes in gorgeous Reverse Proof condition with mirror-like details rising over beautifully frosted fields.
Design Symbolizes Combined Strength Of Great Britain & America
In the design, both the Lion and Eagle are depicted facing right, symbolizing the combined strength of the two nations now coexisting along and supporting one another. The legend “THE LION AND THE EAGLE” is inscribed above the design and is surrounded by a pair of laurel leaves. The 2024 year-date and Mercanti’s initials—JM—are located just above the Lion’s paw that extends towards the coin’s edge. In addition, the design also includes a special Liberty Bell privy mark to further symbolize the history and bond of the two nations. The Liberty Bell was made in 1752 by the London-based firm Lester and Pack (later renamed the Whitechapel Bell Foundry) for the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall. The bell was cast in London, England, and shipped to Pennsylvania where it cracked soon after its arrival.

John Mercanti: A Living Legend In The Field Of Numismatics
When it comes to living legends in the field of numismatics, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone more notable than John Mercanti, the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver and the creator of more than 100 coin and medal designs. Now retired, Mercanti achieved everlasting fame as the artist behind the American Silver Eagle design, which was struck from 1986 to 2021. Today, the American Silver Eagle is the world’s most widely traded and collected modern silver coin. It’s also the most popular modern U.S. precious metal coin, having been struck at least 600 million times! Though retired, Mercanti still keeps busy, and here he’s lent his talents to Great Britain’s world-renowned Royal Mint for the second year of a series that shows the national symbols of both America and Great Britain—the Lion of England and Bald Eagle of the United States!
