The Dragon Joins Tudor Beasts Collection
Great Britain's Royal Mint continue its series of Tudor Beasts with the fifth release in the bullion series–the Red Dragon of Wales. This mighty creature appears on the Welsh flag, but its history goes back centuries. Even the legendary King Arthur is said to have used it as his battle standard.
The Standard That Heralded The Tudor Dynasty
This legal tender £25 (twenty-five pounds) coin was struck in a quarter ounce of 99.99% pure gold and shows the legendary Welsh Dragon, one of a procession of carefully carved Royal Beasts from myth and legend that Henry commissioned to stand at the entrance to Hampton Court Palace. The Red Dragon of Wales was an emblem of Owen Tudor, a claim to Welsh heritage that was carried on by his son, who would become King Henry VII. The troops of Henry VII carried a fiery red dragon standard at the Battle of Bosworth Field, the final battle in England's War of the Roses, where Henry representing the House of Lancaster secured the crown of England with a victory over King Richard III and the House of York. The Dragon has been reimagined for the twenty-first century by artist David Lawrence based on a stone sculpture at Hampton Court Palace. The dragon is shown seated with its wings flexed as it clutches a shield. The shield bears the Beaufort Portcullis, an emblem used by the House of Beaufort, a legitimized branch of the House of Lancaster. It was adopted by Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII, and subsequently became an important Tudor symbol.
A Heraldic Beast From The House Of Tudor
The Dragon stands guard along with nine other Tudor heraldic beasts that flank the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace. They were erected by King Henry VIII, who was following in the footsteps of his father, Henry VII, by making sure everyone knew it was his divine right to rule. One must also remember this occurred not too long after the War of the Roses when the House of York and the House of Lancaster waged a bloody war to determine the succession of England's monarchy, out of which the Tudor Dynasty was born.
