Introducing Gilt Silver and Rose Gold-Plated Double Incuse Maple Leaf Reverse Proofs

First issued 40 years ago, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf has become one of the world’s premier gold bullion coins. Struck in 99.99% pure gold, it is among the purest gold bullion coins in the world, backed by an iron-clad government guarantee that collectors cherish and respect.

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of this world-class gold bullion coin, and the Royal Canadian Mint is celebrating with the release of the world's first-ever Double Incuse Gold Maple Leaf featuring selective Rose Gold plating on the reverse proof, as well as the first-ever Double Incuse Silver Maple Leaf proofs featuring selective 24 karat gold gilding on the reverse.

Selective Rose Gold Plating and 24 Karat Gold Gilding
This release is composed of three different special anniversary Double Incuse Maple Leafs: a One-Ounce Gold, Three-Ounce Silver and One-Ounce Silver. The gold coin is struck to an incredible 99.999% fineness and features Rose Gold plating on the iconic sugar maple leaf displayed on the reverse. Similarly, the three-ounce and one-ounce silver coins feature 24 karat gold gilding on the reverse.

All three coins also feature special edge lettering commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Gold Maple Leaf.

What Is an Incuse Design?

An incuse coin displays its design below the surface of the coin rather than above it. It’s a practice that’s existed since ancient times, as this was believed to help the design last longer in circulation before being worn away. Even the United States experimented with the idea from 1908 to 1929, striking our $2.50 and $5 gold “Indian” coins with incuse designs. It’s less common now, though—which makes this spectacular release so exciting!

This 2019 One-Ounce Gold Maple Leaf is a Double Incuse coin, meaning both the iconic Sugar Maple Leaf and Queen Elizabeth II effigy are struck below the surfaces of the coin. It's an effect quite unlike any other type of strike, and a must-have for any Maple Leaf collector.

Reverse Proof Condition—The Minter’s Art Refined

In addition to being Double Incuse coins, these special anniversary Gold and Silver Maple Leafs have been struck in Reverse Proof condition. Normally, a coin struck in Proof condition features frosted designs that hover over mirrored fields. A reverse proof is exactly the opposite—the devices are given a highly polished luster while the fields have a frosted appearance.

To achieve this eye-catching finish, highly polished blanks are struck multiple times under immense pressure, using specially treated dies. The process can be quite time-consuming, and so Proof and Reverse Proof coins are struck in far smaller number than their standard bullion or circulating counterparts. Proof and Reverse Proof coins are the epitome of the minter’s art and are issued specifically for collectors.

Government-Backed Weight, Purity and Value

When it comes to coins, even those struck in beautiful Reverse Proof condition, legal-tender value matters. It means that the coin has been approved by the issuing government and guaranteed for its precious metal weight, purity and legal-tender value. The 2019 One-Ounce Gold Double Incuse Maple Leaf has a legal-tender value of $200 CAD, the Three-Ounce Silver Double Incuse Maple Leaf has a legal-tender value of $50 CAD and the One-Ounce Silver Double Incuse Maple Leaf has a legal-tender value of $20 CAD. When it comes to bullion coins, legal-tender value matters. It means that the coin has been approved by the issuing government and guaranteed for its precious metal weight, purity and legal-tender value. The 2019 One-Ounce Gold Double Incuse Maple Leaf has a legal-tender value of $50, giving it this important protection.

The Gold Maple Leaf series also incorporates additional security features placed there by the engravers of at the Royal Canadian Mint, including radial lines and a micro-engraved laser mark in the form of a maple leaf privy mark complete with a tiny number "19" inside.

Certified Flawless MS70 Condition

Each Double Incuse Gold Maple Leaf has been certified and graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the world's leading third-party grading services, as flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition. Once graded, each coin is sealed in an attractive black-core display holder to preserve its perfection. Each holder comes decorated with an exclusive label commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Gold Maple Leaf.
