The Least British-Looking Coin To Bear The King's Name!

These coins represent the relationship between India and Britain during the era of British Imperial control. At first glance, this appears like the least British-looking coin imaginable. However, hidden (at least to our eyes) within the Devanagari script you'll find the message "George V Emperor of India" along with symbols of a trident, a crescent, and a dagger. So, although the coin may not appear British, it IS a product of imperialism!

Struck During One Of The Longest Royal Reigns In History

Struck in 61% fine silver, this legal-tender 1 Kori coin was issued in 1928 under the authority of King Khengarji III, who ruled the princely state of Kutch in what used to be British India. The longest ruling king of the Princely State of Cutch, Khengarji reigned from 1875 to 1942. Born during the reign of Great Britain's Queen Victoria, he lived to see her son, grandson, and great-grandsons become kings. He died peacefully five years before Great Britain relinquished Direct Rule in India in 1947.

Located on the west coast of the Indian peninsula, Kutch was the only Princely State of India to have a coastline. Its name comes from its unique shape. The Sanskrit word "kutch" means tortoise, which is exactly what the outline of the peculiar-shaped state looked like: a tortoise entering the sea!
