Struck in 160 grams of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, these medals display Tōdai-ji Temple's main hall—the kondō—which houses numerous national treasures and cultural assets, the most famous of which is the statue of Vaircocana Buddha, more popularly known as the Great Buddha of Nara, so named for the temple's location in the city of Nara, Japan. The reverse design features the lions engraved on the doors of the octagonal gilt-bronze lantern together with the hishigoshi diamond-shaped lattice pattern, with the patterned area depicted using the frosting finish processing technique. Constructed in A.D. 738, temple is one of the most famous imperial and ancient Buddhist temples in Japan and was registered as a Historic Monument of Ancient Nara by the UNESCO World Heritage Convention in 1998.
